Review of El Segundo, California

Nice little town
Star Rating - 11/13/2008
I have worked in El Segundo for 35 years, and lived here for 16. We moved here to find a friendly small-town atmosphere with good schools, and we have not been disappointed. Additionally, it has its own very nice library, plentiful public parks as well as public park activities for people of all ages: an indoor swimming pool, a senior citizen center, tennis courts, baseball diamonds, etc., and its own beach with an oceanside state park for RV's just north of it. Freeway accesibility begins with the 105 in El Segundo. It has the famous Old Town movie theater, a brand new giant shopping mall on its east side, a Pacific 16 theater complex near the mall, plentiful strip malls in town, multiple grocery stores, many nice little restaurants including a little 4-star Italian, the post office on Main Street, banks, drug stores; a very self-contained community. Let's not forget the farmer's market every Thursday evening, and it's a low-crime community. The classic El Segundo high school is the most filmed in the world, the revenues of which greatly reduce the need for annual fund-raisers. The quirky aspect of this town is that it is bordered by LAX on the north, the Chevron oil refinery on the south, and is down-wind of a power generating plant's smoke stacks and a sewage treatment plant. You get used to the jet noise, ignore the refinery, the smoke stacks have had scrubbers installed, and the sewage plant is the country's most advanced and least offensive. And of course Chevron contributes significantly to the city's tax revenues. All in all, a nice little town by the ocean right in the middle of the Los Angeles megalopolis.
